This tulip painting was a commissioned piece (2025) for a home in the US.
It features Dutch heritage tulip cultivars dating to 1620-1903 as well as a few wildtype tulips from the East. The most important tulip is the Zomerschoon (1620), a ‘truly broken’ or feathered tulip which will have been traded during the Tulipmania years of the 1630s. This tulip developed tolerance to a mosaic virus to which other broken tulips of the 17th century succumbed; the Zomerschoon is therefore an important survivor. The tulip bulbs were sourced from conservators in Holland and grown in the artist’s garden prior to painting. The double baluster vase is an existing Delft Blue piece dating to c. 1685 and the insects were painted from the artist’s entomological collection or found in the garden. The frame is bespoke and modeled on 17th century Dutch frames.
